Overview

A foundry is that place in a factory that is used to cast metals. Castings are achieved by pouring hot molten metal into molds which are later removed when the molten liquid has solidified into the desired shape and size. Mainly aluminium and cast iron are used for producing the casts. However, bronze, magnesium, steel and brass are also often used for making such casts. On the other hand brazing is a fabrication or manufacturing process that involves the shaping of the metal to desired shape by the application of localized force. The foundry and forging industry is an important part of the metals and the manufacturing industry.

Eligibility and course duration

The eligibility requirement varies from institute to institute. For some institutes you need to be only 8th pass to enter this program.

Duration of this course is generally 6 months and in some cases are of 1 year.

The certification program familiarizes you with foundry works and the techniques involved in forging. You learn the various processes involved in casting metals into required shape and how the material or the casting is to be removed from the mold once it has cooled and solidified. Among other things you learn the various terminologies associated with the foundries like melting, mol making, degassing, pouring, heat treating, surface cleaning, finishing, etc. you also get to learn about the various equipment used in the foundries for casting a variety of metals. As far as forging is concerned you learn about the 2 different types of forging: cold and hot forging. You learn the purpose of forging that is to shape the metal by delivering blows with a hammer. Hot forging requires the application of heat. Applications of forging involve producing hardware tools, kitchen utensils, hand tools, jewellery and traditional weapons like swords, spears, etc. You are provided with suitable hands-on training on both the concepts of foundries and forging and provided.
