Overview
The role of a production and an industrial engineer is quite a similar one. Both are specialized areas in the mechanical stream of engineering. A production engineer primarily focuses on the efficiency of the production processes and the manufacturing systems to optimize production to the maximum. They are mainly associated with industries concerned with manufacturing. An industrial engineer on the other hand is suitable for any kind of industry, not only the manufacturing ones. Thus by undergoing this course you have the added knowledge and skills of both the domains that makes it easier to get a job in the manufacturing industries or the industrial world in general.
Eligibility and course duration
Should have passed 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with the subjects physics, chemistry and math. Admission to these courses are mostly through JEE Mains kind of entrance exams. Need to come in the merit list for the top colleges.
Duration of the course is 4 years.
More about the course
Spread into 8 semesters of 6 months each, this undergraduate degree course prepares you for a career in engineering in the mechanical field. With specialization in production and industrial engineering you can get into a wide array of manufacturing industries and factories. Other than the usual common subjects in the 1st year of study, the courses teach you the manufacturing and production principles that are of utmost value for optimising production. You get to understand terms such as supply chain management, lean manufacturing, ergonomics, human factors, root cause analysis, process improvement, total quality management and so many more. Other than the usual mechanical engineering topics on engineering mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, heat transfer and machine design, there will be specialized topics like production engineering, operations management, industrial engineering, project management, tool design and so on.
Jobs and opportunities
As a production or industrial engineer you have job opportunities in every industry and manufacturing unit. There are jobs both in the private and public domain. With the country growing in industrial production with leaps and bounds, there are plenty of opportunities for mechanical engineers specialized in the production and industrial streams. An array of industries is for you to choose. Automobiles, consumer goods, aircraft manufacturing, locomotive and wagon industry, plastics and consumer ware, petrochemicals and many such industries are good job hunting grounds for a production or industrial engineer. You can also enrol for M.E. and M.Tech courses for further specialization.
