Composed of fine and coarse materials including sand, gravel, crushed stones and even recycled concrete bonded with fluid cement, concrete is one of the most common building materials used for construction of a variety of structures. Over time a number of structures, high rise buildings and towers have been designed and constructed. The first ever concrete structure in the modern era was built in the middle of eighteenth century in England. In the middle of 19th century, reinforced concrete was invented. It kind of brought a revolution in the designing and construction of concrete structures. For a civil engineer in the construction industry, concrete is the most commonly used material. A course in design and construction in concrete structures will thus lead you to a rewarding career in the construction industry.
Eligibility and course duration
Bachelor's degree in the field of civil or structural engineering. AMIE holders too may apply. Duration of the course is one year.
More about the course
The main aim of this program is to develop civil engineering professionals who are trained in the designing and construction of concrete structures and buildings. Here in this course you learn the principles of structural engineering and those in construction management. You are provided with the knowledge of application of concrete in a wide variety of construction projects. You develop an understanding of the ratio of mix of the aggregates with that of the cement paste depending upon the application of the concrete. All modern construction these days are made up of RCC or reinforced concrete. You get to understand the properties that are gained by the concrete because of the reinforcement provided by the steel bars inside the concrete. You learn about concrete frame structures and how they are erected. You learn of the formwork or the mould that takes in the liquid concrete and gives it the required shape when dry. Among other things you learn about the preparation of the concrete, mixing cement, water and the aggregates in a mixer and finally pouring it into the formwork.
Undergoing this course enables you to apply for jobs in the civil construction industry. As a civil or structural engineer you will employed for a variety of private and public sector projects. You can get a job in the civil department of the government. You may also pursue a master's program in structural engineering.
