Through this program you will have a better understanding of many of the concepts related to soil mechanics. You will be learning the types of foundation, for example, shallow and deep foundations. How to design a foundation depending upon the site investigation report and the nature of the building to come up, techniques for ground improvement, if any, are few things that you learn. You also learn about safe bearing capacity of the soil, which explains the maximum weight the soil can bear. There are various other terms that you will come to understand while undertaking this course. Some of these are- Individual Footing, Strip Footing, Raft Footing or Mat Foundations. All these are types of shallow foundations. Among deep foundation is pile foundation which is a kind of a long cylinder of concrete. Other things that you learn are soil investigation techniqes, backfilling, underpinning and so on. Underpinning is the process of strengthening of foundations. Backfilling means to put back the excavated soil around the foundation.
