M.E. or Master of Engineering is a post graduate degree course in a technical field with many different specializations. Processing and Food Technology is one among with that belongs to the Agriculture Science and Technology field. This course has very wide applications and the candidates learn about principles of science and their uses in the commercial production of foods from pre-defined raw materials. The course also teaches about the processing of vegetables, fruits, different dairy products and includes different processes like pasteurization, heat exchange, evaporation, etc. The course supports the candidates in developing the new technical competencies in bioprocess engineering and they learn about developing and executing their research plans.
the duration of this course is 2 years. These 2 years are equivalent to 4 semesters. Each semester is having 6 months duration and ends with final examinations. Candidates need to qualify each semester separately to complete the course successfully.
The course requires candidates holding Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree with a specialization in Food Technology, Food Science, Food Process technology or any other related subject. This course must be pursued from a reputed institute and candidates should have scored 60% or higher to get admissions in top-ranked institutes.
Age requirement is also an important criterion for admission but it varies from one institute to another.
For admissions, most of the institutes either conduct their own entrance tests to consider the performance of candidates in national level and state level entrance tests. Director merit-based admissions are rare in this course.
Candidates need to submit the applications for both institute and entrance exams before the last date of applications. They should not forget to enclose the other required documents along with the application to get it processed further.
Further Study options
After completion of this course, the available option for those who are willing to continue their studies is Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy in Processing and Food Technology. It is a research-based study and candidates allowed to conduct research under the supervision of their guide.
The course syllabus includes topics like food process technologies for quality assurance, transformation processes, food packaging, etc. Candidates learn about biochemical reactors, refrigeration cycles, theology and transport phenomena in food processes, powder technology, and process plant design fall in this course.
They can work as a food microbiologist, food technologist, Production In-charge, industrial performance officer, etc very easily.
