Overview
For a country like India where a majority of the population depends upon farming and associated activities, agricultural engineers have a key role to play. The Indian agricultural scenario is still a lot dependent upon the traditional way of farming, where manual labour still plays a dominant role for the different farming activities. But times are changing and many of the agriculturally rich regions like Punjab and Haryana are taking to power and farm equipment in a big way. These machineries that run on power completely change the way agriculture production takes place and help boost the production of food grains and other agricultural produce. A post graduate course in farm machinery and power engineering is thus a fruitful one to seek employment in the farm sector.
Eligibility and course duration
Bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering or other related areas in agriculture. Admission to the program is based on written tests and marks obtained in the qualifying degree. The course is of 2 years in duration.
More about the course
Here in this course you learn the principles behind the application of mechanical and physical power for the operation of various farm equipment. The course brings into focus the various disciplines relevant to agricultural engineering, namely, electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, biological and electronics. From environment, ecology, engineering mechanics, engineering thermodynamics to subjects on farm machineries, irrigation engineering, pumps engineering, tractors, power units and post harvesting machines, you get to learn them all here. The post graduate programs are more research based and there will be many field based projects during the course of the program. A part of the syllabus also delves on the design and development part of farm machineries, where one gets to understand the principles behind conceptualizing the design of a farm product. The course also brings into focus the latest in developments in the field of electronics and information technology. Information technology is said to have revolutionized many of the practices in agriculture and are instrumental in generating more profits for the farmers.
Job opportunities
As an agricultural engineer you could be into designing and developing agricultural equipment, machines and structures. You can work in the farming, food processing, forestry or the fertilizer sector. You could work for aquaculture farms, agricultural research institutes and agricultural engineering colleges. You may work for the government in the agriculture sector. You may also take up doctoral programs like PhD.
