Overview

Drilling engineers work in the oil and gas industry. They are into the task of drilling oil wells for the purpose of extracting oil or gas from the depths of earth. They mostly work at drilling sites, which may be located onshore as well as offshore. They work in tough working conditions but are usually very well paid. They are into variety of activities at the site, which includes, other than the actual operation of drilling, tasks related to designing the wells, cost estimation and maintaining the drilling machinery.

Eligibility and course duration

Class 10th pass from a recognized school board. The candidates need to appear for an entrance test for securing admission to the course. Others with 2 years ITI qualification may join laterally to the 3rd semester of the program, on condition that they have at least 60% marks in their qualifying exams.

Duration of the program is 3 years.

The diploma program in drilling engineering is a vocational based training program that trains you on the various aspects of drilling operations in oil & gas fields, offshore as well as onshore. The course is structured in such a manner that you get absorbed by the petroleum industry, once you pass out from this 3 year long full-time program. In this course you are introduced to the various procedures involved in drilling operations in an oil and gas field. You are made aware of the various health and safety factors associated with drilling oil wells. How to plan for the drilling of an oil or gas well and the designing aspects for the wells are taught to you. You learn to estimate the costs and do cost appraisals for setting up the wells. You are made aware of the environmental hazards associated with drilling. As a drilling engineering personnel, you ensure that entire extraction process is safe, smooth and efficient.

Job opportunities

There is no dearth of jobs in the drilling engineering trade. As a drilling engineer, you mostly get jobs in oil and gas fields for the purpose of extraction of petroleum. You may be employed by one or the other private or public sector companies involved in oil exploration like Reliance and ONGC respectively. The various job profiles for a diploma holder in this trade are Assistant Driller, Sampler, Drill Logger, Junior Geologist, Rig Superintendent, etc. You may also take up suitable degree courses in engineering.
