Introduction
Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy is a research-based study course which allows the candidates to learn through conducting experiments and drawing conclusions. Ph.D. can be done in all the fields including both theoretical and practical. Pharmacology and Toxicology are the part of science which analyzes the effects of the drugs on the body, the way it works, the associated safety aspects, common adverse experiences, etc. Basically, it is the study of the various interactions occurs between chemicals/ drugs and living organisms which affect any normal or abnormal biochemical function.
Candidates should be self-motivated, should have adaptability, self –discipline, and patience to become successful in this field.
Eligibility
this course requires Master's degree holders in the field of Pharmacology. Candidates holding M.Pharma, M.Phil in pharmacy or any other equivalent course from a recognized institute are eligible for this course. Other accepted disciplines are Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biophysics, Biotechnology, etc.
Admission Procedure
Admissions are offered through national level entrance tests like CSIR/ UGC NET, DBT JRF, etc. Candidates need to appear in these tests and those who perform well can get admission in top-ranked institutes. Admissions through these tests also provide scholarships to the candidates.
Other ways to getting admission in this course are self-sponsored, direct by contacting the supervisor, by extending the project, etc.
Duration
The duration of this course 3 years in the normal course. It can be extended in certain circumstances subject to approval from the authorities for valid reasons. The extension is very difficult in government-funded Ph.D. course but a bit easier in self-sponsored cases.
Further Study options
After Ph.D., the option for higher studies is Post Doctorate, which is nothing but an extension of research work done during Ph.D. Candidates can also pursue Diploma level course in related subjects like veterinary pharmacy, herbal products and their standardization, Pharmaceutical Management, etc as per their interest and professional requirement.
Course Highlights
Candidates need to read and learn the available literature during the initial phase of their Ph.D. This makes them understand what is already done in their field. In this subject, candidates learn about general pharmacology principles, toxicology, wonder discoveries in pharmacology, instrumentation in drug analysis, etc. A part of clinical pharmacology is also included in the course.
In the end, candidates need to submit their thesis.
