The field of photonics mainly concerns with the particle properties of light or photon. Photons are finding increasing applications in a number of areas and they cover the whole spectrum of light, from ultra violet to infra-red. Most of the applications are however to be found within the visible spectrum to near infra-red light. Photonics have applications in fibre optics, telecommunication, signal processing, transmission, medicine, biotechnology and a range of sensing and detecting equipment. Numerous fields are associated with photonics, such as optoelectronics, electro-optics, optomechanics and quantum optics. Applications in photonics use semiconductor diodes, LEDs and lasers as light source.
Eligibility and course duration
M.Sc in physics, electronics or other related fields of science and engineering with at least 55% marks in aggregate in the qualifying exam. Admissions are offered to candidates who are able to clear the written test as well as interview. The research proposal that they submit, need to get accepted too.

A short research program, M.Phil photonics has a research component along with the coursework. The coursework consists of few papers. Two of the papers are related to the subject i.e. photonics and a third one is devoted to research methodology, where you learn the fundamental principles behind carrying out research and also lessons on teaching and the learning process.
