Graduate Mechanical Engineering is a pre-sea course for mechanical engineers opting to join the merchant navy as a marine engineer. It prepares you for a career at sea on ships, oil tankers and other floating vessels. For someone with an ordinary engineering degree it is not possible to directly start working on a ship as the work environment and the engineering requirements are totally different than what it is at land based installations. Graduate Mechanical Engineering is a short term bridge course that familiarizes you with naval engineering.

More about the course
The graduate mechanical engineering course is an essential one to get familiarized with ships and its machineries and equipment which are not taught about in a general engineering course. The course is conducted in a few institutes across the country in cities located near to the coast. As long as you are a trainee of this course, you are referred as a deck cadet, engine cadet or engineering cadet, depending upon your department. The course trains you for the merchant navy for working in ships and floating vessels. Though most of the training is on shore, a part of it is on ships. It is a purely residential course with strict rules and regulations about discipline. Cadets are provided with uniforms that they have to wear all the time during training.
Almost everyone who successfully completes this course are all absorbed in the merchant navy. They join as a Junior Engineer in one of the ships run by government agencies, private or even foreign ones. The field of merchant navy is a very lucrative one, promotions in the field are very fast and in no time you reach to the post of Chief Engineer of the ship. Other than sailing also, there are very good opportunities in other marine and engineering fields.
