M.Tech. Microwave and Radar Engineering

Master of Technology in Microwave and Radar Engineering

Aspiring to take up a career in the field of microwave engineering? Want to take up the study of microwave, antennas and communication radars? Find here the details of the course M.Tech in Microwave Engineering and Radar, an offshoot of electronic engineering.

Course Name: M.Tech. Microwave and Radar Engineering
Group: M.Tech.
Stream: Engineering
Course Category: Communication
Duration: 2 Years

Overview

Microwaves are one kind of electromagnetic waves with very short wavelengths. They mostly range from 1m to 1mm and are thus very small compared to the radio waves. Other than cooking food in ovens, microwaves are used extensively for a variety of applications. They are used for point-to-point communication, radars, satellite communication, remote sensing, radio astronomy, wireless networking, weather forecasting, Bluetooth, GPS and in the medical field in a host of ways, including cancer treatment. While studying microwave engineering, you will be learning about its various applications, design of the system, circuits and its components. Microwave engineering thus provides for a wide array of opportunities for establishing a rewarding career.

Eligibility and course duration

B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics and Communication engineering and other related fields. Others with qualification such as MSc or AMIE in Electronics too may apply for the course. Entry to the course is through a valid GATE score. Marks in graduation too are accounted for.

Duration of the program is 2 years.

More about the course

The M.Tech program in Microwave Engineering is offered by some of the leading engineering institutes in the country, including the IITs. As is apparent from its numerous applications, microwaves have distinct advantages over other electromagnetic waves, especially because of its short wavelength. The short wavelengths allow the use of small sized antennas and low power transmitters that are quite effective for various radar and communication links. Microwaves are suitable for point to point communication because it supports larger bandwidth, which results in more information being transmitted. More antenna gain, antenna sizes are reduced and low power consumption because of higher frequencies.

Some of the topics that are taken up for study in this field are- electromagnetic engineering, antenna theory, microwave antenna, radar systems engineering, microwave integrated circuits, satellite radio navigation and microwave systems lab.

Job opportunities

M.Tech in microwave and radar engineering opens up job opportunities in diverse fields. Some of the best jobs in this field are in industries and sectors that deal with wireless communication, navigation equipment like GPS and radars. One may also work in fields such as radio astronomy, medical electronics, semiconductor processing, defence and the food industry. Microwave engineering provides for excellent opportunities for research. You can thus take up a PhD program in this field. That will also help you to take up teaching as a career in universities.
