Overview
Sericulture is a very ancient process that dates back to a period, even before the birth of Christ. It is believed that the production of silk from silkworm was first achieved by the Chinese. In recent times along with China, India is one of the main producers of silk. Most of the silk that is produced in the country is through mulberry farms. The PhD program will provide you a deep understanding of the rearing of the silkworms, the production of silk and of setting up of farms for sericulture.

More about the course
The field of sericulture is a very important one for a country's economy. It is all the more important for our country, which is one of the two largest silk producing nations. There is a good amount of research being undertaken by our scientists in order to help our farmers sort out various issues that hamper the growth of this industry. The field of sericulture has thus provided a lot of scope for young scientists to work in this field by conducting research on a number of areas. Among these areas a few are about silk worm rearing, silk worm breeding, genetics, diseases in silk worms, pest control, egg production, silk reeling, mulberry cultivation, nursery management, composting, vermicomposting and so on. As a research scholar you also get to advise silkworm farmers on the technological aspects of silkworm rearing and silk production.
