Overview


Company Secretaryship is a distance-learning program that is conducted by The Institute of Company Secretaries in India (ICSI), a very reputed professional body established by the Govt. of India. The main purpose of this correspondence course is to judge the capability of the students through exams to qualify as company secretaries. The course is conducted in 3 stages. They are- foundation program, executive program and professional program. The foundation program is of 8 months and prepares 10+2 pass students for this professional course.

Eligibility and course duration


10+2 or any equivalent qualification in any stream other than fine arts. Graduates too may apply. Those who are only 10+2 pass have to appear for all the 3 stages, whereas graduate students have to appear only for executive and professional programs.

Since it is a correspondence course, it takes at least 3 years to complete the course including the training period.


Course Details

A person who qualifies as a Company Secretary is popularly known as a corporate lawyer, as these professionals mainly deal with legal affairs. The subject matter of the course revolves around corporate laws and some aspects of corporate accounting.

CS course is a distance learning course. The examinations are conducted at two levels, i.e. executive program and professional program. There are two ways to get into the executive level. The first one is qualifying through Company Secretary Executive Entrance Examination (CSEET) and the second one is direct entry i.e. all those candidates who have passed the final level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) or the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants in India (ICMAI).

CSEET: The CSEET is an entry-level examination to the executive level of the program. It is an online examination, conducted four times a year, i.e. in January, March, July and November. The exam is MCQ-based, and the fee is Rs.1000/-.

Executive level: Executive level examinations are in a subjective mode and comprise of two modules, i.e. Module-1 and Module-2. A candidate has a choice either to give an examination of both groups in the same attempt or in different attempts. Papers at the executive level are-

  1. Paper- 1, Jurisprudence, Interpretation and General Laws (Max Marks 100)

Admission to the company secretary program can be had throughout the year. But the exams are held twice a year in the month of June and December. As is mentioned above there are 2/3 stages to the program depending upon whether you are a graduate or not. You can appear for the final professional program only after completing the executive program. There is a 15 months long training program too that has to be undertaken either after completion of the executive program or after professional program. For training, the candidates are send to renowned companies where one gets to work under the supervision of a company secretary. The entire program has been divided into many modules. This helps the candidates to appear for the exams every half yearly. As a company secretary you need to have a thorough understanding of the various laws concerning business organizations and enterprises. You are also made aware of the management principles so as to advice the management on legal and financial matters.

Company secretaries have a plethora of opportunities for them in the job field. A full time company secretary (CS) has to be employed by any business enterprise that has a paid up share capital of more than Rs 2 crores. Even companies listed on the stock exchange need to have a company secretary employed in their rolls.
