Overview
Clinical neurophysiology deals with the working of the nervous system and its disorders. Conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, seizures, stoke and multiple sclerosis are dealt by a clinical neurophysiologist. Clinical neurophysiologists are in fact medical specialists who help in the diagnosis of diseases associated with the central and peripheral nervous systems. Neurophysiology is a kind of bioelectrical activity that measures the electrical signals emanating from the brain, spinal cord and the nerves. This helps in understanding their function and healthiness. This clinical specialty is more into diagnosing diseases, rather than treating them.
Eligibility and course duration
Should have one of the following qualifications for admission in NIMHANS.
- Graduation in physics, electronics or computer science.
- Diploma in electronics, electrical, instrumentation or computer engineering.
- Three years' experience as an EEG technician after 10+2 or senior secondary.
Admission to the program is through entrance test or interview or as required. Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
Closely linked to neurology, the discipline of neurophysiology mainly concerns with our mental health. Various disorders of the nervous systems could be diagnosed by studying this field. Through this specialized course, you will gain an understanding of the various neurophysiology procedures like Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), Polysomnography, Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and a few others like intraoperative monitoring and evoked potential tests (EP). You will also get to learn of the diseases or disorders that are associated with the central and the peripheral nervous systems. You will get to learn of the tests to measure the electrical functioning of the brain, spinal cord, spinal roots, muscles and the entire nervous system. Through these tests and diagnostics one gets to detect the precise location of the lesion and its abnormalities. In addition, you will be learning of the electronic, magnetic and electrical means to carry out these tests and record the functions in the computer.
Job opportunities and prospects
As a clinical neurophysiologist, you will be mostly working in large hospitals in the clinical neurophysiologist department. Other than the corporate hospitals, some of the government and military hospitals provide for excellent job opportunities in the field. To further your career in this discipline, you may seek to undertake post graduate programs like M.Sc, M.Phil and PhD programs. It may lead you to a career in teaching, research or practice.
