M.Sc. or Master of Science in Applied Microbiology is a Post Graduate degree course in the field of Microbiology. It deals with the study of microorganisms and their effects on other living organisms. The course has multiple domains including, recombinant DNA Technology, Food and Dairy Microbiology, Microbial biotechnology, microbial physiology, Fermentation technology, agricultural microbiology, etc. The course also emphasizes the topics like molecular biology; science related to food and microbiology and supports an independent research work.

This course requires candidates holding a bachelor degree or any other equivalent 10+2+3 pattern course in the field of life sciences like botany, zoology, biotechnology, microbiology, etc from the recognized institute. The minimum qualifying marks should be 50% or higher to become eligible for this course. Age criteria vary from one to another institute.

After completion of this course, candidates can pursue M.Phil in Marine Microbiology or microbiology, Ph.D. in Microbiology or any other related subject, etc. Once Ph.D. is completed, candidates can continue their research work in the form of post-doctorate degree.
The course starts with topics like general microbiology, microbial diversity, microbial physiology, and biomolecules. Candidates also learn about food, environmental and agricultural microbiology through this course.
The latter part of the course includes the study of bio fertilizer, immune technology, medical microbiology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics.
The technical part of the course includes microbial genetics, industrial biotechnology, herbal technology, molecular biology, hematology and related clinical techniques.
At the end of the course, a short-term project is also included in the course, which is also known as a dissertation.
