Overview
Also known by the name System Science and Automation, Systems Engineering is a highly relevant course that is offered by the Electrical and Electronics departments in most colleges. It is an interdisciplinary field that merges engineering with managing of complex systems through software, robotics and automation. It includes modelling and simulating the various complex systems that we see in say, spacecraft designing, robotics, artificial intelligence, manufacturing and a host more. Systems science is concerned from the beginning to the end of a system process. Whether it's designing, creation or operation of the system, it is relevant everywhere.
Eligibility and course duration
A bachelor's degree in engineering in electrical or electronics streams. Others with qualification in a relevant field such as mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing and industrial engineering may also apply. Admission to the program is through the score obtained in GATE examinations.
The duration of the M.E. program is 2 years, covering 4 semesters.
More about the course
System engineering is comparatively a new field of study but finding increasing applications in the industry in almost every field from manufacturing to space travel. For any physical system, it has scope during each and every phase beginning with conception, design, development, manufacturing, operations and so on. In fact, every engineering process comes under the purview of the systems science or engineering and automation. There are broad classifications in this field. One concerning products, which focuses on the design of the systems. Enterprises systems pertains to organizations or enterprises as a system and service systems engineering are meant for serving other systems. Being an interdisciplinary field, one gets input from other relevant disciplines too.
Among the topics that we encounter in this field are scheduling and optimization, supply chain management, retrieval systems, pattern recognition, motion estimation, robotic systems, computer integrated manufacturing, neural networks, artificial intelligence and many more.
Opportunities and job prospects
With our industries getting highly automated and artificial intelligence too becoming more of a reality, the potential for growth in system engineering sector is quite high. In the years to come more development would be seen in this front and more will be the employment opportunities. The field has scope in manufacturing, aviation, space science, research, transportation and in every enterprise and industry. For those inclined towards further research in the field, one can opt for a relevant M.Phil or PhD program. A career in academics may also be opted for.
