About the course
It is an undergraduate course in Folklore. This course is suitable for those students who want to enter into tourism, NGOs working for Tribal rights academic institutes offering programs on Folklore. This B.A program is aimed to equip students with the understanding of the Folklore literature – both oral and written. The course deals with the folk traditions of certain community such as folk literature, folk music, folk dance or various kinds of folk performances.
Eligibility Criteria
The basic qualification for pursuing B.A Folklore course is a pass degree in Higher Secondary Examination or 10+2 in any stream but preferably from Arts stream and from a recognized college or university.
Some institutes may conduct an entrance examination for admission to their undergraduate course.
Course Duration
The minimum duration of B.A Folklore course is of 3 years which is divided into six semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of six months.

B.A Folklore primarily focuses on geography, time, space and literature of the folklore and culture of India. The program aims to find out the relation between folk culture and context such as Literature, Sociology, History, Anthropology and Folklore Studies. The program focuses on themes such as oral literature, social customs, material culture, performing arts, the methods and theories of Folklore such as historical – geographical, cross – cultural, historical – re-constructional , psycho – analytical, functional, ideological, structural and contextual - all of which demand an interdisciplinary approach.
The program discusses about the developed and vibrant traditions of oral narratives in India and facilitates the issue of tribal culture as a concept with special reference to literature, historical or linguistic studies of the folklore of India. The social relevance of B.A Folklore may be categorized as follows:
- This Diploma program seeks to address that section of students who are not covered by formal education; mainly those students who intend to pursue higher education in inter disciplinary subjects or who seek to join the NGO circles.
- It has the objective of appreciating folklore in all their composite forms and of evaluating the political and social context in which culture manifests itself.
- It has an obligation to an ethical appraisal of traditional as well as modern society.
