Overview
Urban planning is a versatile and multi-dimension field involved in providing solutions on aspects like infrastructure, transportation, water supply, waste disposal, etc. in cities and towns. These and a host of other issues are looked after by urban planners in many of the urban and regional areas. As cities and urban areas grow, the requirement for infrastructure like public transport, potable water, sanitation, sewage disposal, electricity, roads and parks also rises. A rising population has increasing needs. It is for the urban planners to assess and analyze the needs of the population in such urban areas. They formulate plans that help in the development and effective maintenance of the urban and the suburban areas.
Eligibility and course duration
A bachelors degree in disciplines such as civil, architecture, environment and transportation engineering. Admission to the program is through GATE scores and common entrance tests.
The course is of 2 years duration.

Here in this course you will learn to look into various issues concerning urban areas, such as infrastructure planning, environmental pollution, communication, land use and availability of clean air, water and electricity. You also learn how towns and cities are to be laid out, how and where roads are to be laid, provisioning of parks and locations for garbage or sewage disposal. Primarily, urban planning concerns with looking after the welfare of the society and the population through measures that improve upon the living conditions of the people. Urban planning draws from many disciplines like civil engineering, architecture, design principles, environmental engineering and the social sciences. Known by many other terms like regional planning, urban and regional planning, town planning and rural planning; the trade of urban planning is chiefly responsible for the orderly development of our cities and rural areas. Whether it is for demarcating land for building of parks, supply of water to human settlements or conserving trees, ponds, water bodies and other green areas, the urban planners look after them all.
Job opportunities
As an urban planner, you are likely to be employed by municipalities and other government departments looking after the cities and towns. You could be employed by many of the private real estate firms who are into construction and development activities in our urban as well as rural areas. You could take up research programs like PhD, if your interests are in research. You can take to consultancy too.
