Eligibility:
The eligibility criteria for Marine Engineering is quite stringent as compared to traditional engineering disciplines. A candidate having passed 10+2 Science and JEE exam and IMU CET (Indian Maritime University) is eligible for admission to this course. Additionally the candidate needs to physically fit for sea service as per defined norms, having a minimum height of 157 cms and 0.5 distance vision and no color blindness.
Admission criteria:
The admission is based on IMU merit ranking of IMU-CET.
Course overview:
Marine engineering is a part of applied engineering and integrates areas of electrical, electronic, computers and mechanical engineering to design, develop, operate or maintain marine vehicles: surface ships, cruise ships and submarines or work in aquatic environments like oil platforms docks etc . The course is designed to enable the candidates take up leading positions in the marine industry.
Course Details:
This 4-year bachelor's degree course is designed to expose the students to basic topics in marine engineering through class instruction of theory, tutorial and practical, projects, and internships. He first year curriculum includes basic subjects namely mathematics, workshop, mechanics, engineering drawing, electricity, maritime geography, computer programming, thermodynamics, electrical measurements, strength of materials. The second and third year curriculum includes marine related subjects like electronics, applied thermodynamics, electrical machines, ship structure and construction, navigation, fluid mechanics, probability and statistics, fuels and lubricants, engineering materials, internal combustion engines, alternators and motors, ship fire prevention, pumps, naval architecture, marine environmental practice, machine design, refrigeration, dynamics of vibrations etc. The final year subjects are elective subjects focused on current trends in naval architecture followed by project and internship. Overall the course is designed to make the candidate industry ready.
Job opportunities:
Marine engineering is one of the best career options in India. A graduate in marine engineering has ample opportunities in government, corporate and private marine sector. They can work as for various jobs like offshore recovery, renewable energy, under water vehicles, marine transportation, remote sensing, global climate monitoring, defence as ship engineer, ship design engineer, marine system engineer, marine structural engineer etc.
Higher studies:
The graduate can opt for higher education and take up MTech Marine Engineering.
