It has been almost 150 years since inventor Nikolaus Otto patented the internal combustion engine. Over the years, the popularity of the IC engine skyrocketed with their use mainly in automobiles. For a certain period, they were also used to power aeroplanes and locomotives. Even now, the automotive industry heavily depends on the IC engine to power its cars and bikes. The farm sector too depends on the IC engine very heavily. There have been attempts to provide alternative means to power our vehicles, but they are still decades away from being acceptable to the masses. Until then the internal combustion engine is going to dominate the automotive sector in a big way.
Eligibility and course duration
Bachelor of engineering in mechanical or other allied streams. Intake to the program is through GATE score or entrance tests.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
The field of internal combustion engines provides for great scope for learning. The way the automotive sector is growing and the increasing demand for vehicles, there is a growing concern for pollution and fuel efficiency. The focus of the course is to work on such aspects, improving the fuel efficiency and reducing the environmental impacts. The lessons are theory as well as practical based. You will be delving deep into the principles on which the IC engines work. You will touch upon topics like advanced thermodynamics, heat transfer and IC engine design. You are also exposed to the standards and regulations concerning IC engines.
Job opportunities and prospects
A course in IC engine leads you to a very fruitful career, especially in the automotive sector. With the exponential growth in number of vehicles on the road, there is a huge opportunity for engineers specialized in the working of IC engines. A number of foreign automobile manufacturers have set up shops in the country manufacturing cars, trucks and bikes. There are plans to make India the manufacturing hub by many of the vehicle manufacturers. Moreover, the country is developing with leaps and bounds, driving the sales of vehicles. All these factors provide for a very rosy future for the country’s automobile industry. Some of the top automobile companies for placement are Maruti Suzuki, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra, Hyundai, Honda Motors, TVS Motors and so on. Those with an inclination towards research may seek a PhD or an M.Phil in the field.
