Introduction
Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy is a research-based course and it is considered the highest academic degree in any stream. Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology includes the study of operating systems, database management systems, evolutionary algorithms, distributed systems, formal modeling, human-computer interaction, verification of embedded systems, etc. Candidates also learn about systems software, hardware, application software, programming languages, decision support systems, design and analysis of algorithms, ERP and MIS through his course.
Although this course includes extensive research and lab work, candidates can pursue it with their jobs side by side.
Eligibility
Candidates holding Post graduation degree in the same or related field like Master of Technology, Master of engineering, etc from a registered and reputed engineering institute are eligible for this course. There is no age criteria for this course and can be pursued at any stage of professional life as per the suitability and requirement of the candidate.
Admission Procedure
Admissions in Ph.D. can be availed in different ways. The most common way is to appear in national level or state level entrance tests. Candidates securing top ranks can get admissions in top-ranked institutes very easily through this. They also get stipends during the course if they get admissions this way.

Candidates can join Ph.D. by extension of the project they are already pursuing but this requires approval from the guide.
Duration
The duration of this course is not very strict and ranges from 3 to 5 years. The initial 2 years are considered as a junior research fellowship and after that, it is Senior Research fellowship.
In certain circumstances, candidates may also get extension against valid reasons.
Further Study options
After Ph.D., candidates interested in continuing their research can enroll in Post Doctorate degree which is nothing but the extension of the work they are doing in Ph.D. Apart from Post Doc, other short-term courses to improve the skills can be pursued if it is required as per their job.
Course Highlights
The initial phase of the course requires literature reading and candidates go through the research publications and the work is already done in their field. They study electrical engineering basics, engineering related physics, logic designs, discrete mathematics, etc
After that, research work or lab work starts. In the end, thesis needs to be submitted.
Job aspects
These candidates can work in research labs, academic institutes, and hardware-software companies very easily.
