Overview


CIPMT is a specialized program especially developed for the benefit of potato growers in West Bengal. The program has been developed by the regional centre of IGNOU to aid the farmers in fighting against the menace of pests. With gradual commercialization of the agriculture sector, there is a huge shift towards the use of fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and other chemical based agents. As a result, there has been a gradual degradation of the environment, the soil and the produce, resulting in losses to the farmers. The aim of the integrated pest management technique is to take a combined approach towards safeguarding the crops and the produce from pests and the chemicals used to protect them.

Eligibility and whom it is meant for


Anyone who has passed class VIII and is engaged in potato cultivation. Others who are into seed potato tuber growing, NGOs, cold storage employees, agri-business managers and field supervisors from agriculture departments can also enroll.

The program is of 3 months duration.

The course is offered by the School of Agriculture, IGNOU regional centre in Kolkata, West Bengal. As of now, the medium of instruction is English and Bangla. The course fee is minimal, rupees five hundred, so as not to burden farmers with limited means. The course is important from two aspects. One, it helps in educating the farmers about the latest in pest and disease management techniques to protect their crops from pests and insects. There are also important tips on growing potatoes. Secondly, the course is useful in gaining entrepreneur skills in the field of potato cultivation. The course lays emphasis on developing entrepreneurship spirit among the farmers.

The integrated pest management technique lays stress on a combination of biological, chemical, physical, cultural and genetic manipulation techniques to improve the productivity of potato tuber and to make them resistant against diseases, insects and pests. The program emphasizes on the need to restrict the use of market driven fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides that are having toxic effect on the environment.
