Eligibility:
For admission to BE production course the candidate must have passed the HSC (10+2) examination with science subjects namely: physics, biology, maths and chemistry. Some Institutes have separate quota for candidates who have also qualified the JEE examination.
Admission criteria:
After the last day of filling the application forms, the applications are scrutinized and a merit list is prepared for HSC/ JEE scores. Admissions are based on this merit.
Course overview:
Production engineering is a blend of manufacturing technology and management science. The curriculum is designed to provide the student with technical, analytical and managerial skills which are required for operations and production in an industry with optimal use of time, labour and resources.
So after completion of the course a production engineering graduate has wide knowledge of engineering practices and is aware how to handle the management challenges pertaining to production to ensure that the production process is smooth, optimum, judicious and economic.
Course Details:
This is s four year course comprising of eight semesters taught using theory, practical, tutorial, seminars and projects. The first year curriculum includes basic subjects namely technical English, mathematics, engineering physics, engineering chemistry, computer programming, engineering graphics, basic electrical and electronics engineering, workshop, engineering drawing. The curriculum from second year onwards focuses on core branch subjects like basic and advanced machining process, basics of thermodynamics, thermal engineering, fluid mechanics, engineering metallurgy, electrical drives and controls, numerical methods, strength of materials, theory of machines, power drives and control welding technology, environmental science and engineering, engineering metrology and measurements, metal forming technology, design foundry technology, production planning and control, Computer Aided Product Design, total quality management, mechatronics etc. The names of some subjects could differ from college to college. In the final year the student carries out project work in a group where thy either do research, design or implement some idea. Some colleges require that the student carry out a six month internship in the final year. Overall the production curriculum enables the student to acquire theoretical concepts and hands on skills and become capable to join the industry or opt for higher education.
Job opportunities:
The graduate engineers can find employment in production firms or manufacturing industries or industrial automation units either in the private and government sectors. The engineers are employed at the supervisory or managerial level and are responsible for the smooth operations. They are offered any of the following job roles: process engineer, plant engineer, operations engineer, maintenance engineer, management engineer, manufacturing engineer etc.
Higher studies:
The graduate can opt for ME/ MTech in the same branch or for MBA in an area of choice.
