Overview
In many colleges and in industries, Metallurgy and Material Technology is also popular as Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. It is a four year undergraduate degree program, consisting of eight semesters. The first two semesters are common for all branches of engineering. From the third semester onwards the core courses get introduced. The course gets you the knowledge of material sciences and the metallurgical engineering involved in extracting of ores and minerals from the depths of the Earth. It also let you know the various refining processes for metals and non-metals and the different methods involved in manufacturing finished products.
Eligibility and course duration
A pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math. For the more popular colleges, an admission to this course is through entrance exams like JEE Main and Advanced.
The duration of this undergraduate course is four years.
More about metallurgy and materials engineering
The main areas of focus during the course are physical metallurgy, extraction metallurgy, mineral processing, manufacturing processes, heat treatment of steel, material testing processes like destructive and non-destructive tests. Some other important topics in this branch of engineering are corrosion engineering and characterization techniques for materials. In extraction metallurgy you will be studying about the extractions of metals like iron, steel and other non-ferrous metals. Among the different manufacturing technologies are metal forming, casting, welding and powder metallurgy.
A growing number of industries including aviation and space technology are in the lookout for materials which are lighter and stronger. As such the world over the focus is on developing materials which are far more superior in properties compared to the present ones. So the course curriculum will also include topics on advanced materials like ceramics, composite materials, polymers and also nano materials. Due to advancement in technology, computer applications too form an integral part of the syllabus.
Job opportunities
Metallurgy and materials engineering professionals have always been in demand in the country and abroad. There are vast opportunities in the field. All metal based industries involved in extraction, refining and manufacturing are good hunting grounds for metallurgists. Public sector companies also provide suitable employment opportunities. Most of the best known research labs in the country and abroad like DRDO, ISRO, NASA and others employ metallurgists and material engineers for advanced research in the field. After doing the course one can easily opt for M.Tech and Ph.D programme in the related field.
