Overview
AMIE in Mechanical Engineering enables you in becoming an engineer, even without attending a regular college. It's a popular course among students who are not in a position to attend regular classes because of preoccupation with jobs. AMIE gives an easy opportunity to practising diploma holders in acquiring a degree qualification at a reasonable cost compared to regular education. For this course, diploma holders get an advantage over others joining soon after their 10+2. They have to appear for less number of papers. Out of 10 papers in Section A, a diploma holder appears for only 4. With 9 papers, Section B is common for both categories.
Eligibility and duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Math. Duration of course depends on candidate. Someone capable enough, can complete in 3 years. Others may take more time. Anyway, 6 years each for both sections is the maximum period within which the course is to be completed.
More about the course
Mechanical engineering is about levers, mechanical systems, machines and how they all work. It combines the principles of physics and engineering in dealing with designing, manufacturing and working of every mechanical system. The core concepts on which mechanical engineering is based upon is mathematics, mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, kinematics, material science and hydraulics. There is a certain overlap with other engineering disciplines like electrical, civil, aerospace, production, industrial and metallurgy. It borrows principles from almost every other discipline. Among those aspiring for an engineering degree, it has the broadest appeal. In AMIE, the Section A is common for all branches of engineering. The core papers in mechanical engineering are to be attempted in Section B only. 6 of the Section B papers are compulsory. Remaining 3 papers can be selected from the optional papers.
Job opportunities
Mechanical engineers are required in most industries. Along with other branches of engineering like electrical and electronics, they form the backbone of the manufacturing industries. They find employment in a wide variety of sectors like aviation, energy, railways, automotive, manufacturing, robotics, aerospace, shipping, construction and many more. Jobs are available both in the private as well as the public sector. One also gets the opportunity for going for higher qualification in this field by doing M.E. or M.Tech. AMIE Mechanical Engineering is equivalent to a regular undergraduate degree and students who do this course get equal opportunities vis-a-vis regular students.
