Overview

The job of an Indian Administrative Officer is perhaps the most desired jobs in the country. A very challenging job, most of the civil service aspirants are drawn to it because of the power and prestige associated with the post of an IAS or IPS officer. Passing the civil service exams is itself a challenging task. It requires a lot of dedication and effort. One needs to be an exceptional student throughout one's school and college career. The civil services exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission has got two stages. The Preliminary forms the first stage. The second stage consists of the Mains and the interview.

Eligibility

For sitting in IAS Prelims, the minimum qualification is an undergraduate degree in any stream from a recognized university. Minimum age is 21 years and maximum age limit 32 years. Number of attempts are 6. Age and number of attempts are relaxable for the reserved category and physically handicapped students.

More about IAS Prelims

The Preliminary is a screening test for the Mains exam. The marks scored in the Prelims is not counted for forming the final merit list. The pattern of the exam is objective type. There are two papers. Paper 1 is General Studies and Paper 2, Aptitude Test. Aptitude test is qualifying in nature. One has to score a minimum of 33% marks. Marks obtained in General Studies get counted for qualifying to the Mains. Both the papers are of 200 marks each and of 2 hours duration. Blind candidates get twenty minutes extra. The papers are set in both Hindi and English. Both the papers are compulsory.

Syllabus for the Prelims

The paper 1 for the Prelims consists of current affairs concerning national and international affairs. It also consists of Indian history, polity, governance, social and economic affairs. Issues related to environment and climate change are covered too. The paper 2 is about aptitude skills, logical and analytical reasoning, mental ability tests and comprehension passages.

What next after qualifying in Prelims

Qualifying the Prelims lead to the all important Mains. Number of candidates qualifying for the Mains is 12-13 times the vacancies. Hence it's essential to perform well in the Prelims, especially in paper 1. In paper 2, one needs only 33% to qualify for the Mains. The papers in Mains are of descriptive type. Interview or personality test is also part of Mains.
