Introduction to the Ph.D Course
Metallurgy is the branch of Science that deals with study of Physical and Chemical behaviour of metallic elements, their inter metallic compounds and its alloys. It also covers the aspects of metals production, ore processing, the metals they contain and the metal mixtures to produce alloys. The course Ph.D in metallurgy includes the study of physical metallurgy, metal extraction of Iron, steel and non ferrous metal extraction, heat treatment of steel, manufacturing of technologies that includes metal casting, metal forming materials technology, welding. Mechanical metallurgy covers material testing, corrosion engineering, hydro-metallurgy, pyro metallurgy, refractory materials, etc.
The course equips the students to solve problems quickly, understand the manufacturing aspects of materials , metal behaviour, properties, differences between alloys and to evaluate the metals. The course enables the students to tackle the challenges in metallurgy. Studying Ph.D offers large scope to expand the knowledge and trains to become independent thinkers through inquiry.
Additional DescriptionThe course enables the students to undertake research project guided by intellectual supervisors and mentors with scientific knowledge. The program helps in providing ample opportunities to meet researchers in the concerned areas. The research lays emphasis on alloy processing, characteristics of metals, its alloys, engineering properties of materials and its processing. The course duration is spread over 3 years and trains the students in handling equipment required for research work. The students would be exposed to fundamentals of metallurgy to advanced studies and also imparts strong foundation on the subject. The course prepares students with academic and professional development for their future career growth.
Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D in MetallurgyCandidates who have completed MSc with science-chemistry, Physics or engineering from recognised
universities with good academic records are eligible for admission
The candidates should possess interest in investigation of properties of metallic elements, compounds and alloys.
Candidates must have ability to be innovative and work independently or as a part of a team in the fast development of research environment in the field of metallurgy.
The candidates should possess problem solving skills, management skills, and good communication and writing skills.
Job Opportunities for Ph.D candidatesOn completion of the course the students find jobs as material scientists, engineers, material technicians and mining engineers in mining industries. Ample opportunities are available in colleges as teaching professionals.
