Introduction to Post Graduate diploma in Geriatric Medicine
Geriatric medicine deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disabilities in elderly persons. The course duration is one year and covers basic geriatrics and clinical geriatrics. The geriatric study focuses on the unique needs and complex medical problems of elderly persons. The course focuses the area of ageing scenario, factors responsible for ageing, the events occurring during the ageing process, care and modern medicine for the elderly. The environmental factors for improving the quality of life of elderly, various process and approaches for counselling the patients, diet/nutrition for elderly. The various schemes for effective rehabilitation and the various scales used for enhancing the quality of life for the elderly are covered in the program. The study includes the aspects of infections, fractures, depression, dementia etc, demography and mortality of the elderly.
