Overview
With Master of Engineering in Computer Aided Design you get to learn the use of computer systems in drawing and creating engineering designs of say a car, ship or an aeroplane. Computer aided design (CAD) has revolutionized the field of designing. Many complex designs and shapes are now feasible because of this methodology. It has not only improved the productivity, but has also improved the quality of designs. It has led to easy documentation of designs and creating of database for the purpose of manufacturing. Passing the course successfully gets you in industries with in-house facilities for design and R&D.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech degree in mechanical engineering or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Admission is mostly through entrance exams. Minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in the qualifying degree.
The duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years, split up into four semesters.
More about the course
The course lays emphasis on the mechanics of design and creating new product designs with the aid of computer systems. The course curriculum is such that it builds a strong foundation in the field of design and manufacturing. You get exposed to the latest softwares like AutoCAD, Revit, Infraworks and others. The first two semesters are focused on theory & laboratory works, third on theory & initial phase of project work and the final semester is purely for the project. The project work is based on your field of study, either in the college campus or in the industry, under the supervision of a suitable faculty. In midst of the course, especially during summer vacations the students are expected to get attached with some industrial unit in a field of your choice and undergo thorough summer training.
The core subjects include advanced mathematics, computer aided graphics, concept of engineering design, computer applications in design, integrated mechanical design, engineering system dynamics, finite element analysis, mechanical vibrations, metallic materials and manufacturing processes.
Job opportunities
With industries paying more focus on research and development these days, more and more in-house facilities or laboratories are coming up with sophisticated computer systems equipped with computer aided design software. Many industries like automotive, aerospace, ship building, lighting, prosthetic limbs manufacturers and others provide placements to CAD professionals as soon as they pass out from their colleges. The services of CAD professionals are also used in architecture for building energy efficient and higher quality buildings.
