Overview
Master of Engineering in Manufacturing helps you specialize in the scientific principles behind efficient production of various products and items. You come to learn how to maximize production, minimize rejections and downtime of machines, but maintain quality in production. The innovations and scientific principles brought by this engineering field in the factories and the industries has kind of brought a revolution in the manufacturing industry. Assembly line production and automation are fruits of manufacturing engineering. To some extent manufacturing engineering is synonymous with mechanical engineering and has a lot in common with specialized fields such as production and industrial engineering.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or other related fields like Production and Industrial Engineering. Depending upon the college, other requirements could be a valid GATE score in the specific branch or minimum 60% marks in graduation.
The course is to be completed in 2 years (four semesters).
More about the course
This postgraduate program is divided into 4 semesters. The first two semesters focus on theory classes and laboratory work. Third semester is for theory and first phase of project work. Fourth semester is completely devoted for the final project work. The project work is to be done in an industry setup under the guidance of a faculty member. Among many other things, you learn estimating production schedules, designing systems for directing the flow of material through the various stages of the shop floor, designing and developing machine tools. Because of automation and amalgamation of electronics with mechanical processes, you also learn to work in interdisciplinary teams and developing processes and products through the principles of mechatronics.
Some of the core subjects are advanced material technology, micro manufacturing, automated computer integrated manufacturing, optimization techniques in manufacturing, manufacturing metrology and quality engineering.
Job opportunities
Opportunities are galore in this field. Most of the jobs are available in the manufacturing industry, with most major companies and industries employing engineering professionals specialized in manufacturing. Suitable for employment in both government and private sectors. One can further his/her education in this field by opting for courses at the doctoral level. Those inclined towards teaching can get into engineering colleges as lecturers or professors. Public sector enterprises in the manufacturing field like BHEL, BEML, BEL, SAIL, etc provide attractive employment opportunities to prospective candidates. Some job profiles in the field are planning specialist, material handling engineer, production engineer and mechatronics engineer.
