Overview
Industrial microbiology is a branch of applied microbiology. In this course you will be studying the role of microorganisms in a variety of industrial processes. Through these processes we can obtain a number of useful high value products, such as drugs, fuel, food items, chemicals, sweeteners, detergents, beverages and many more. An industrial microbiologist is one who utilizes the microorganisms in manufacturing of food and the industrial products mentioned above. As a student of industrial microbiology, you learn the engineering and scientific principles behind the processing of materials by microorganisms. Through this course one gets to understand the role of industrial microbiology in safety and quality assurance for food, pharmaceutical and chemicals.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Depending upon the college, admission is on the basis of marks in the higher secondary exam.
The duration of the course is 3 years and is covered in 6 semesters.
More about the course
Industrial microbiology and biotechnology are very much related and are often the same. It's a multidisciplinary science and for a successful career a student often needs additional expertise in subjects like molecular biology, biochemistry and bio-engineering. As an industrial microbiologist you will be instrumental in many discoveries and development of processes which may result into new products like vaccines, antibiotics, organic chemicals and other products useful in the food & beverage industry, healthcare, agriculture and waste water management.
Some of the subjects in industrial microbiology are fundamentals of microbiology, microbial physiology, biochemistry, microbial genetics, molecular biology, food & agricultural microbiology, industrial microbiology, immunology and bioinformatics.
Job opportunities
An industrial microbiologist can choose from a wide array of fields. They are as diverse as hospital laboratories, clinics, research organizations, food & beverage industries, oil recovery, drug manufacturing companies, chemical industries, agriculture and environment control. Thus an industrial microbiologist has a varied job profile. They can be immunologists, geneticists, cell-biologists, biochemist, biotechnologist or virologist depending upon their role. Industrial microbiologists have good opportunities to continue their education at the master's and doctoral levels. By gaining these qualifications, one can get employment in government departments or organizations which work for food quality, food safety, biological safety, pharmaceutical safety and other similar areas related to quality. Those desiring to share their knowledge and experiences through the teaching medium, for them, the doors of top rung colleges and universities are always open.
