Overview
In Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry, one studies the industrial applications of chemistry. The course is very suitable for those who have an analytical and scientific bent of mind. It is also suitable for those willing to pursue a research based career in the field of chemistry. The aim of the course is to produce graduates who would be able to apply the principles of physical and chemical processes to transform raw materials into useful products for the benefit of mankind. The course integrates the learning of chemical processes with the knowledge about engineering, economics and industrial management.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admission to the course is mostly on the basis of marks in 10+2. Some colleges may require a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying exam.
Duration of the course is 3 years, split into 6 semesters.
More about the course
Compared to chemical engineering, industrial chemistry is somewhat different. While chemical engineering focuses more on the design and process engineering, industrial chemistry gives emphasis to aspects of chemistry and environmental topics. As an industrial chemist you learn to optimize chemical processes and finding solutions for issues such as environment, water treatment, pollution control, etc. In fields such as energy production and petrochemicals you learn to improve upon their efficiency. The topics covered in the course are based on industrial aspects of both organic and inorganic chemistry. There are topics on material science, industrial pollution, effluent treatment, waste management, industrial chemical analysis and heat & fluid flow in the chemical industry.
Prospects in industrial chemistry
With B.Sc Industrial Chemistry one can pursue a career in a variety of industries. There are various possibilities. One can become a lab chemist, production chemist, biomedical chemist, technical specialist, researcher, teacher, scientist, etc. Other than in the chemical industry one can find jobs in research and development labs, government departments, pharmaceutical companies, industries related to fertilizers, leather, paper, paints, textile, oil & petroleum, water purification plants and a host of other fields. With such wide applications of chemistry among the various industries, the scope of employment in this field is enormous. Apart from the wide variety of jobs, one can also prefer to go for higher studies in this field. Pursuing postgraduate degree programs like M.Tech, M.Phil and Ph.D are some of the options in this direction.
