Overview
Mechanical engineering is one of the most popular branches of engineering in our country. All through these years a good many number of students have opted for this branch. Mechanical engineers are required in most industries and that too in large numbers in a variety of roles. The field has a number of specialized streams too and depending upon one's choice and inclination one can opt for a particular one. Mechanical engineers are responsible for many of the engineering marvels that we often come to witness in our day to day living. It's them who design and develop turbines, engines, aircrafts, transport systems, industrial machineries, tools, medical equipment, etc.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math from a recognized board or university. Admissions to the top colleges are through entrance exams like JEE Mains.
This undergraduate course is of 4 years duration.
More about the course
Among the oldest branches of engineering, mechanical engineering is primarily responsible for most of the industrial revolution that has taken place in Europe and elsewhere from the 18th century onwards. Much of the technological development that we are seeing today in the field of transportation, aviation, shipping, industrial activities, manufacturing are as a result of development in mechanical engineering. This field has many core areas, some of which are mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, thermo science, material science and structural analysis. These days it also branching out into some new areas like mechatronics and robotics. Through this course one gets to learn the basic role of a mechanical engineer that is designing, developing, analysing, manufacturing, testing and maintaining mechanical systems. It is the endeavour of the mechanical engineers to constantly innovate and invent new technology, thus making our lives easier and efficient.
Job opportunities
Mechanical engineers are required in most of the industries and production houses. Whether it is a public sector company or a private sector, factories cannot work without them. In many of the government departments like railways, transport divisions and even in the armed forces they are required in huge numbers. They are also needed by the airlines, aerospace companies, mining companies, robot manufacturers and a host of other fields. Other than directly getting into the industries one can pursue further education and specialize in one's chosen field by doing M.Tech or M.E. courses. Many opt for research in this field and go for PhD courses after postgraduation.
