Wondering which branch of engineering to choose for your undergraduate studies. A course in mechanical engineering could possibly be the right one for you. After all it is the most versatile and broadest field of engineering profession, involved in bringing solutions to a wide spectrum of global challenges.

Overview

Mechanical courses teach you the fundamentals of design, development, testing, maintenance and operation of various machines, engines, power equipment and thermal systems. Courses in mechanical engineering are most sought after courses in the country. Since this field is very broad, a number of specialization options are available. Options for higher studies are available at the masters and doctorate levels. Some of the specialization subjects for undergraduates are: robotics, automobile, aeronautics, machine design, thermal fluids, bioengineering and product development.

Eligibility

For getting into undergraduate or diploma programmes in mechanical engineering, a pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math is necessary. A certain minimum marks may be necessary depending upon the course. Admissions in reputed colleges such as IITs and NITs are based upon entrance exams like JEE Mains and Advanced. Other institutes may have their own exams or may consider marks from JEE Mains.
