Civil engineering can be studied as a full time degree or diploma in many well-known government or private colleges across the country. The studies can start with diploma or degree, and move on to do post graduation and doctorate if higher studies interests you. Civil engineering can be sub divided into several sub disciplines namely structural, environmental, transportation, architectural, sanitary, geo technical, water resources, earthquake, urban planning, waste water, offshore, façade, coastal, construction engineering. For example: structural engineering may include design and build buildings, bridges etc. while transportation engineering focuses on designing and building roads, railways, highways, ports airports etc.

A civil engineer can opt for a career in public sector in state or central government or private sector in small scale, medium scale or large scale companies. In the construction industry the civil engineer can be involved in designing buildings or bridges and may design, build or maintain jetliners, Boeings, space station or even rockets in in aerospace sector or in ship building industry. An example of an innovative in profile in the automotive sector may be improving the load carrying capacity of a chassis or enhance strength of bumpers or doors. There is scope to work full time or part time or on contract in private or government sector or start your own construction or consulting firm.
