Electricity is a wonderful invention that has changed how we live in this world. A world without electricity is unimaginable. Does the world of electricity, magnetism, atoms and electrons excite you? In case so, then a course in electrical engineering could be the one, most suitable for you.

Overview

The discoveries related to electricity by Benjamin Franklin brought a kind of revolution during the 18th century. Since the first bulb was lighted by Edison, there has been rapid advancement in the field of electricity. Through a course in electricity one can learn about the basics of electricity, its generation, distribution and transmission. One also learns about the various applications of electrical energy. There is a huge demand for personnel trained in electrical courses. A wide variety of courses are available in this field. Other than the basic course of an electrician, courses are available at all levels – diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in electrical engineering.

Eligibility

For a diploma or a basic course in electricity, 10th pass is required. For the bachelor's program one has to be 12th passed in science stream. Those having degree in electrical engineering or related branches can opt for master's and beyond. Most admissions are taken through entrance exams.

More about the courses

Most courses in electrical engineering are professional courses which deal with various electricity related topics. Today almost every industry is dependent on electricity and its varied applications. The field has various disciplines and sub-disciplines. Other than electricity, electronics and electromagnetism, it now covers a wide range of subjects including power engineering, power electronics, signal processing, control system, telecommunication, digital systems, optoelectronics, integrated circuits, computer engineering, etc. From large scale power engineering to small scale micro and nano electronics, it covers a host of topics. A strong base in physics and mathematics is very essential for establishing oneself in this field.

Job opportunities

There is a huge demand for electricians and professionals trained in electrical engineering. The heavy rush for seats in electrical engineering in top colleges suggests the same. Most industries have requirements for electricians and engineers. Both the state and the central government provide a host of job opportunities in this field. Every year public sector enterprises recruit hundreds of professionals from this field as engineers as well as technicians. In the defence sector, all the three arms - Army, Navy and Airforce recruit electrical engineers in good numbers as officers and in other ranks. In the private industry too, electrical engineers can select from a wide variety of jobs, from manufacturing electrical and electronic components to white collar jobs in the IT industry. A qualified and experienced electrical engineer is always in demand as faculty for most engineering colleges.
