What you learn

The courses cover a host of topics from mineral exploration to closure of mines. Subjects are based on metallurgy, exploration, geology, geotechnics, production, impact assessment and processing of ore. Other topics include, science behind rock behaviour, rock strength, testing, surface and underground mining. Health, safety, impact of mining on environment and the economical aspects also form part of the syllabus.

Essential attributes

Working in the mining industry involves working underground at great depths. It requires a great deal of physical fitness to sustain the tough working atmosphere. One requires mental strength to work long hours in very inhospitable conditions. Working in mines is not for the weak hearted. Underground working spaces are mostly dimly lit, poor in air quality and cramped. There's always the danger of the soil caving in or the mine getting flooded with water. Those ready to work in such challenging conditions, should only join the field. However, with time the miners do get habituated to the hostile work environment and it's business as usual for them.

Jobs in mining

These courses train you for getting employment at various levels in the mining industry. Some of the job profiles are pit technician, mineral exploration field assistant, underground sampler. Opportunities also exist in geotechnical, foundation construction, waterwell, mineral exploration and environmental drilling. As a metallurgist one can find jobs in mines in metal recovery and concentration operations. Metal refineries, smelters and foundries too employ metallurgists. With suitable qualifications one can even do research and engage in technology development.
