Eligibility

For undergraduate courses, minimum qualification is pass in 10+2, any stream. For postgraduation courses, some institutes conduct entrance test. In certain M.Phil courses only defense officers above certain ranks are only eligible to apply. Also, the officer should have a certain minimum percentage of marks in his/her postgraduation.

The idea behind defense studies is to promote national security by generating and disseminating information on defense and security related matters. These courses cover a variety of topics, starting with fundamentals of war and peace and the problems associated with them. Geopolitics and Military Geography topics focus on strategy and its geographic dimensions. Topics on National Security focuses on India and our security policies. Subjects on Military History studies the traditions of Indian military since the ancient times. The topic, Defense Organization of India introduces the students to the Indian security system. Duration of courses

Undergraduate courses are of three years duration. MA degrees courses two years. Whereas postgraduate diplomas and M.Phil courses, mostly last one year. The Ph.D programs can be anywhere from three years to five years, depending upon the program.

Job prospects

Defense officers undergoing such courses will have improved career prospects in their respective service. Certain jobs in the police and paramilitary services like Border Security Force, Indo Tibetan Border Force, etc demand for such courses. A number of research and advisory jobs related to security matters are available with the central government for those who are well qualified in subjects related to security and defense matters. Intelligence agencies working for the government too prefer manpower who have additional qualifications in defense studies and have majored in subjects like International Relations.
