Course Overview
Many people like to pursue research work, after they finish their Master's degree. The course is termed as PhD. Now PhD. is a general term. The term PhD. is accompanied with the subject or specialization that it is applied upon. Say, somebody has passed M.Sc. or M.Tech in Electronics. Then he will be opting for PhD. in Electronics. If somebody is M.A. in Bengali, then he should be opting for PhD. in Bengali. So the term PhD. in itself is incomplete. It makes sense when you add up the subject of specialization along with it. Here are the general eligibility criteria for PhD. course.
Eligibility Criteria
You must have a Master's degree. Generally universities look for candidates who have obtained 55% or more in the aggregate of Master's degree. Some universities allow only those people who have 60% or more in their aggregate.
Next you must have cleared any kind of government affiliated JRF fellowship examinations like NET or SLET etc. Once you get a clear score from any such examination you can apply for the PhD. interview in the university. Then when you clear the interview you will be admitted in the PhD. course.
Further Details on the course
This course takes around 7-8 years to get completed. So those who are thinking of attempting PhD. without a full time scholarship must have a job in parallel. You can opt for PhD. even if you did not sit for NET or SLET or any other government affiliated examinations.
That way you need to first look for any newspaper advertisement which says that any university is looking for admission of candidates in PhD. The department of that PhD. course should be same as that of your Master's level specialization. Otherwise you will not be allowed to apply for that PhD. course. After you submit the admission form in the respective university, you will be called for the admission test. If you score above 50% in that admission test, then you will be called for an interview. In the interview, you will have to justify, why you want to pursue PhD. If your examiners are satisfied by your answer they will admit you in the course.
