Course overview:
The mining engineering branch deals with the techniques for extracting minerals from natural environment comprising of non-metallic and metallic ores and solid fuels. This Bachelor's course curriculum provides conceptual and practical knowledge so that the graduates can become competent professionals to work in the mining industry.
Course Details:
This four year course is covered in eight semesters with theory, practical, tutorials, seminars and projects. The first year curriculum includes basic science subjects namely physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering drawing, mechanics, programming, electrical engineering etc. In the second and third year core subjects like mining mechanization, mine-surveying, mining geology, mine surveying, underground mine environment, mining machinery, mine development, electronics and instrumentation, coal mining, mechanics of fluids, hydraulic machines, machine drawing, computer aided graphics, mechanics of solids, mining geology, drilling and blasting etc. are taught. The curriculum also includes electives where the students shall understand the emerging trends related of the mine environment, sustainable mining engineering. The students work on a project where they apply the concepts learnt to practice.
Job opportunities:
After completing the course candidates have a bright future in the mining-engineering industry in India since this country is a land of natural resources. They take up job roles which may include mining techniques like blasting, production, processing, drilling, extraction etc. The mining engineers are also responsible for ensuring that the project they are working is environmentally safe and does not destroy the natural environment. Over a period of time the mining engineers gain experience and start working in specialized fields namely: ventilation, rock mechanics, mine planning, mineral processing, ore reserve analysis, design of engineering structures, mine safety and health etc.
Higher studies:
After completion of the engineering course the graduate can opt for studying for the Master's course ME Mining/ MTech Mining / MBA.
