Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) Course Admissions 2025 - 2026 Academic Year

Bachelor of Technology abbreviated as B.Tech is one of the most popular bachelor's degree courses in India. B.Tech is often the first choice of students who have an appetite for technical education. In this section of Indiastudychannel.com describes more about the scope and traits of a B.Tech degree.
This course needs no description. Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech), which is abbreviated as B.Tech is the most popular course among students. Sometimes, it is also referred to as B.E. or Bachelor of Engineering but the fact remains that the curriculum for both these courses are the same. It is not an untold fact that there is still a positive bias amongst Indian parents towards technical degrees when compared to degrees such as humanities or commerce. Parents still want their children to undertake technical courses, perhaps due to the apparently more job opportunities. Thus, there is a reason why lakhs of students move every year to cities like Kota and Delhi where they prepare to clear the entrance exams and get into the reputed IITs and NITs. The B.Tech. degree is a professional engineering degree which is awarded to a student after finishing a course which is generally four-year long. Despite lay offs that the IT industry is seeing, the number of students trying to get into IITs remains the same. The difference between B.Sc. and B.Tech is that B.Tech is more of a professional degree, more oriented towards practical knowledge enhancement. B.Tech is a more welcome degree amongst corporate houses when compared to the B.Sc. A student aspiring to become an engineer has various options. The most famous areas demand-wise, where B.Tech students seek specialization are B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech in Information Technology, B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and B.Tech in Electronic Engineering. However, this doesn't mean that other areas are less important.

Duration of B.Tech Courses - The duration of a B.Tech course generally is four years. However, depending on the college or institution where one is enrolled, the period might vary sometimes. These days, there are also combination courses such as B.Tech & LLB. wherein the student studies across more than one discipline and has an opportunity to learn more at the same time. The duration of such integrated courses can be either 5 years or 6 years. Also, some colleges offer integrated M.Tech courses whereby the student has to cover the curriculum of both B.Tech and M.Tech courses. The advantage of such integrated M.Tech courses is that there is no chance of any hiatus and the student gets to advance his technical education without any gap.

Eligibility For B.Tech Courses - There are many entrance exams that a student aspiring to be a successful engineer can take. The most popular engineering entrance exam is the JEE. For admission into the premier IITs, the student needs to qualify the JEE Advanced Exam while one can get into NITs on the basis of JEE Mains Score. The eligibility requirement for JEE Main 2018 is that the date of birth of the candidate must be on or after 1st October 1993, which means that the maximum age limit prescribed for JEE candidates is 25 years. For admission into IITs, NITs and IIITs, the candidate needs to have scored at least 75% marks in his XII exams or be in top 20 percentile in respective boards. The number of subjects in class 12h exam must be at least five. It must be kept in mind that JEE candidates usually take up the combination of Physics, Chemistry and Maths, however some people also take the more difficult counterpart of PCMB (B being Biology), however, for a student who is sure that he wants to further his studies in the engineering stream and not the medical line, it is advised that he or she takes the PCM course in XII grade rather than PCMB. The maximum number of attempts that a student can make for clearing the JEE is three. Apart from the JEE, there are other entrance exams that most engineering candidates take. BITSAT is a test by clearing which, a student gets to enrol with one of the most reputed institutions in the country, BITS Pilani. The eligibility requirement for BITSAT (other than B.Pharma) is that the candidate must have passed the 12th exam from a recognized central or state board with PCM and must have adequate proficiency in English. There are many other state level exams clearing which gives students a ticket to engineering colleges in those states.

Cost of Study for B.Tech Courses - If you were successful in clearing the JEE exams, then cost of study shouldn't be a concern. The reason is that banks are more inclined to grant educational loans to IITians as compared to other B.Tech students. The institute fees for one semester at IIT Madras is something about a lakh. The fees at other IITs is relatively similar. However, the fee that a student is required to pay is much less at some NITs. For instance, the fee for the entire B.Tech course at NIT Agartala is just about 2 lakhs. The fee for first semester at NIT Jamshedpur is Rs. 37750 while for the remaining semesters, it is Rs. 25250. However, the cost of studying this course can be higher if studying at private institutions. The semester fee for B.Tech at VIT is Rs. 1,85,000 which is much more when compared to both IITs and NITs.

Admission Procedure for B.Tech Courses - The procedure for admission into B.Tech courses goes both ways. While there are some colleges which do appreciate the marks scored by a candidate in his plus two exams, most reputed colleges conduct their own entrance exams. We have already discussed about the JEE and the BITSAT. The other entrance tests that students usually take are VITEEE (for entrance into VIT Vellore and Chennai campus), SRMJEEE (entry into SRM university), WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam), MUOET (for Manipal University), JCECE, BCECE, KEAM etc.

Career Prospects of B.Tech Courses - B.Tech graduates have a bright career ahead of them. For the talented ones there is no dearth of job even today. Corporations are willing to shell out enormous amount of money to take in engineers with good internships. The college from where one graduates also plays a part in this.

Higher Study Opportunities in B.Tech Courses - There are a number of options when it comes to higher studies for a B.Tech graduate. The most obvious choice for a B.Tech graduate is pursuing M.Tech and achieve advanced knowledge in the stream in which one has the undergraduate degree. IITians are also famous for opting MBA as the next best thing. And there is no reason why they shouldn't – It is even today, considered as one of the most valued skill sets in the market. B.Tech graduates also opt to sit in UPSC, Banking and Clerical exams after finishing their courses.
