Using the sign of Exclamation

The sign of Exclamation is used

1.After an interjection, an exclamatory phrase and an exclamatory sentence, expressing the feeling of joy, sorrow, wonder or surprise.

2.After poetic form of address or after emphatic nominative address.

3.After operative sentences.

4.To show that a speaker is shouting, or that a noise is loud.

5.At the end of a forceful order.

6.In informal or humorous writing, !! or ?! are sometimes used to show strong emotion or loud sounds.

Examples of 1.

1.Alas! I have failed in life.
2.How lovely the child is!
3.Hurrah! We have won the match.
4.What a man! What an end.
5.Alas! What a fool I have been!


Examples of 2.

1.Milton! You should be leaving at this hour.
2.O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells.
3.O World! O Life! O Time!
4.Rarely, rarely, comest thou,
Spirit of Delight!

1.May God bless you!
2.Live long democracy!
3.May you succeed!


Examples of 4.

1.“Dave, where are you? Dave!"
2.Bang! She slammed the door.

2.“Stop, there's a car coming!"


Examples of 6.

1.“Help!!"
2.“Terry's been arrested by the police." "Arrested?!"
3.Mary made a hell of noise- splash!!!
