The Tenses—part II

Hi Friends,

I hope all of you must have understood when we use the Present Indefinite Tense and how to form them. Now let us discuss about the formation of the Past Indefinite Tense.

Past Indefinite Tense (Simple Past Tense)

Past Indefinite Tense is used:

1.To express an action completed in the past. Generally, an adverb or adverb phrase of past time is used in the sentence:

They went to Delhi yesterday. It rained last night.
I received your letter a few days ago.Why did you call me?


2. To express some past habit:
My father always helped the poor. I never went to Mumbai.

Formation of Sentences

Affirmative Sentence

Pattern: Subject + second form of the verb+ object.

Examples:

1.I went to school. 2. We went to school.
3.You went to school. 4. He went to school.
5.She went to school 6. They went to school.
7.Razia went to school. 8. Aman went to school.
9.The children went to school. 10. The boys went to school.

Remember: 1. The second form of verb is used with every subject.
2. A Full Stop (.) is used at the end of the sentence.

Note: In Negative and Interrogative sentences, only the first form of the verb is used.

Negative Sentence

Pattern: Subject + did not + second form of the verb + object.

Examples:

1. I did not go to school. 2. We did not go to school.
3. You did not go to school. 4. He did not go to school.
5. She did not go to school. 6. They did not go to school.
7. Razia did not go to school. 8. Aman did not go to school.
9. The children did not go to school. 10. The boys did not go to school.

Remember: 1. The main verb is always changed in the first form.
2. Did not is used after the subject.
3. A Full Stop (.) is used at the end of the sentence.


Interrogative Sentence

Pattern: Did + subject + first form of the verb + object.

Examples:

1. Did I go to school? 2. Did we go to school?
3. Did you go to school? 4. Did he go to school?
5. Did she go to school? 6. Did they go to school?
7. Did Razia go to school? 8. Did Aman go to school?
9. Did the children go to school? 10. Did the boys go to school?

Remember: 1. The main verb is always changed in the first form.
2. Did is used before the subject.
3. A Question Mark (?) is used at the end of the sentence.
