To beat around the bush

To beat around the bush means to avoid speaking about a matter directly, but talking about it in a round-about manner. It is like going round and round a bush without being able to catch somebody you are chasing or just doing so mindlessly.

Sample Usage

1. The audience was beginning to get restless as the speaker was just beating around the bush and not getting to the point .

2. Trisha's mother was getting a little fed up of her daughter's beating around the bush about what had happened at the overnight picnic outing.

3. Shalini's mother wished the school principal would get to the point of why she was summoned to meet him instead of beating around the bush.
