While adding suffix - when should we drop 'e'?

If a word ends with a silent 'e', drop the 'e' when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel (for example, the -ing suffix). However, do not drop the 'e' when the suffix begins with a consonant.

Example:
1) Mr.Ravi likes to skate. He enjoys skating.

2) I could use my notes for reference. My notes are very useful.

In the first example (skate-skating), the 'e' is dropped because the -ing suffix begins with vowel. In the next example, the 'e' is not dropped because the -ful suffix begins with a consonant.

Sample Usage
