When to Use Accelerate and Exhilarate

Accelerate and Exhilarate are easily confused words as they sound similar. However, note that they are pronounced differently - the first with an emphasis on 'acc' and the second with an emphasis on 'ex'.

In order to use the words correctly, you must first understand their meanings to know the difference between accelerate and exhilarate.

Accelerate is a verb.
Meanings: speed up; increase speed; go faster; pick up the pace; hasten; quicken; rush
Antonym: slow down

Exhilarate is a verb.
Meanings: excite; elate; thrill; enliven; stimulate



Sample Usage

Examples of Accelerate:
1. Narain Karthikeyan accelerated his F1 car to catch up with the competitors ahead of him in the race.

2. During the final stretch of an athletic race, athletes always accelerate towards the finish line.

3. The police officer stopped the motorist on the highway as he had accelerated his SUV and gone beyond the permissible speed limits.

Examples of Exhilarate:
1. The mountaineers were exhilarated on reaching the peak of Mt. Everest.

2. It is an exhilarating moment to receive the very first Google AdSense payment.

3. Aditi was exhilarated on knowing that her science project received the first prize in the inter-school competition.
