Rhetoric means the art of formal speech or writing.

Rhetoric is a noun.

Synonyms: mannered language, formal speech, oratory.

Note: Rhetoric is often used in a pejorative sense to mean eloquent language that is insincere or meaningless.

The politician's words were mere rhetoric—an insincere bunch of nonsense.
