Definition: one of two or more words are pronounced the same, but are spelled differently and that have different meanings.

Sample Usage

Words of Similar Sound: Right, Rite, Writ, Write:

a)Right - correct.
Example 1: What you say is certainly right.
Example 2: Put the book back in its right place.
Example 3: It is not right that so many children go hungry

b)Rite - established rule, practice, ritual
Example 1: Several religious rites are to be performed when a Hindu dies.
Example 2: Our society has many rituals of greeting, farewell and celebration

c)Writ: a legal document, a formal legal, written order to do or not do something.
Example 1: As he was suspended from his service, he filed a writ in the High Court.
Example 2: A court may be asked to issue a writ to arrest a person fleeing from his creditors.
Example 3: The Bible is sometimes called the Holy Writ.

d)Write - take down, to inscribe.
Example 1: The teacher asked the students to write down his lecture.
Example 2: Don't write slogans on walls
Example 3: People nowadays prefer to phone rather than write letters.

e)Wright - a maker, an expert carpenter.
Example: Only a wright can make such a fine furniture.
