A watched pot never boils

A watched pot never boils is a proverb.

If you keep a pot of water to boil and wait for it to do so then it appears to take a very long time. Similarly anything that we wait for to happen eagerly and desperately also seems to take a very long time.

The hidden message and warning is to let everything happen at its own pace. Diverting your mind will save you a lot of anxiety and discomfort. So there is no point in spending anxious moments while waiting.

Sample Usage

1. I had been continuously staring at the phone waiting for an important call. The phone started ringing the moment I went inside to get something. This made me realise that a watched pot never boils.

2. In my haste to reach home quickly I kept pressing the elevator button but it still appeared to take a long time. Well, a watched pot never boils.

3. I was waiting at the airport with bated breath for my son to arrive but his flight seemed to have been delayed endlessly. It is indeed true that a watched pot never boils.
