Half a loaf is better than no bread is a proverb which means that we should be thankful for what we receive even if it is not as much as we had hoped for or less than what we deserve.
In other words, pining over things which you could not achieve or which should have been rightfully yours will take you nowhere and make you more grievous. In fact you should be happy and satisfied with what you have got however small it may appear in comparison to your expectations.
The saying becomes more apt with respect to situations for which you have no control over the outcome.
It is also depicted as a perspective towards life in general which will help you in remaining peaceful and happy.
It is similar to “Something is better than nothing" in meaning.
